'If Confucius Rose from the Grave ' by Marge Simon and J. Cloudman

The poem below is a speculative poem written in the context of a Confucian universe.

If Confucius rose from his grave,
He would look up to heaven and sigh deeply.
Confucius regards music as
A humanizing influence on barbaric behavior
What is today's society about ?
Music has become discordant noise ;
Sounds no longer please the soul
Since musicians became hired artists
For propaganda.

If Confucious rose from his grave,
He would intone a song to vent his grief.
Confucianiswm values personal ethics,
Because they hit the mark
For distinguishing the good from the evil.
What is today's society about ?
There are scarcely any public morals to speak of
These days , not excepting even the intellectual.

If Confucius rose from his grave
His fury would flow like a river !
Confucius thinks that righteousness is
The primary condition in a good society.
What is today's society about ?
The officials pervert justice for a bribe,
The ordinary people seek profit exclusively !

If Confucius rose from his grave,
He would return to the grave again !
Benevolence is the core of Confucianism ;
(Without it, Confucianism is an empty conception )
What is today's society about ?
These citizens go to jail for democracy ;
Those students are killed on the Square...

'Ifs' are just 'ifs',
Society reveres poor taste.
Confucius paid attention to
His own morals without thought of others.
Confucius will never come back to life
"One can pick up and go into retirement
In a bad society ," he said.

But Confucius will never rise from his grave
Confucius went into retirement forever.
In China,
Confucianism has died out.
